I was put on one Metformin/day and promised the doctor I would lose 15 pounds by the time I came back in 3 months for my next A1C. I will be starting my 7th month of healthy food choices and YOLI soon. Just can’t say enough good about it. I have diabetes 2, arthritis, celiac, copd, and gout real bad when I started. I want to share my story… I originally started with a low carb diet and YOLI because I have been struggling with weight loss for several months and nothing else was working. I was hopeful, having several people I know doing the program and having good results. I followed the program to a T but much to my dismay, wasn’t losing any weight or inches after the 1st month. Researchers believe that rheumatoid arthritis may be caused by a person’s genetics which cause them to be more prone to the condition. The disease might also be caused by biological triggers or environmental causes.

If you don’t know what pH refers to, it is an acidic/alkaline measure of a particular substance. A neutral pH level, which is neither acidic nor alkaline, is 7.0. Anything above this number is alkaline and anything below this number is acidic.

Before Jan 2011, I was a scholarship athlete.  I ran marathons, worked long hard days on my feet and had tons of energy to travel and have fun. My BBS JOURNEY started on October 13, 2014. I began this journey to get healthier and with hopes to lower my blood pressure as my wife had in the prior 30 days. I was taking 2 blood pressure pills per day with a blood pressure as high as 165/102 and a starting weight of 228.8 lbs. and wearing size 38 pants and Extra Large shirts ( both of which were very tight on me) . I was also having problems sleeping and taking medication (Valium) to help me sleep.
In the first 30 days I lost 22 pounds and 5 inches off my waist without exercising. My blood pressure had dropped to134/84. I felt so much better and with more energy than I’d had in years. I had visited my doctor (in September prior to starting the BBS and then 30 days after starting the program) for a checkup and he was surprised at my weight loss and lower blood pressure and suggested we do blood work. Causes of Hypertension/High Blood Pressure

Although our modern high sodium diet can be said to be one to be one of the main culprits, there are a variety of cause than significantly impact your blood pressure.

If any in the following list applies to you – then it’s time to take the “Bull by the Horns” and do what you need to do.

How Our Modern Diet Contributes to High Blood Pressure

Although many people use medications prescribed by their doctors, there are also many proactive steps that you can take on your own.

One of the best approaches in reducing hypertension is to make some serious decisions about your what you eat.

The main villain for the increase of those Americans who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure is too much “SODIUM” OR “SALT”.

You find unhealthy and high amounts of sodium in a vast abundance of foods we eat.

Why is there so much sodium or salt in many of the foods we consume? There are 2 reasons. The first is because salt is a natural preservative – it keeps food fresher longer. It allows food manufacturers to keep their product on the shelves longer so there’s less waste and spoilage.

The second reason is taste. People like their food to have some flavor and salt is one of the most commonly used condiments.

Why is sodium or salt bad for us? Well, it’s definitely not all bad because we do need a certain daily intake of sodium in out bodies. The problem is that we consume TOO MUCH!

While the right amount of sodium keeps out body functioning properly – too much sodium cause out bodies to retain water. I’ll explain why this is important shortly because there is something else we need to consider.

BUT! Although many health gurus focus on salt/sodium intake, there’s another vital element to take into account and that is “POTASSIUM.”

Out dietary intake of sodium and potassium go hand in hand. I am mentioning this is because not only are American consuming TOO MUCH SALT, and you are also consuming NOT ENOUGH POTASSIUM in your diet.

The sodium potassium ratio is vital to understand because both these elements play a crucial role in managing blood pressure.

Understanding the Sodium / Potassium Ratio and Lowering Blood Pressure

Both Sodium and Potassium go hand in hand when it comes to regulating blood pressure. There is also increasing evidence that this duo of chemicals can also impact bone health as well.

In Paleolithic times (thousands of years ago), and depending where humans resided, our ancestors are believed to have consumed around 11,000 milligrams (mg) of Potassium per day. Our diet back then consisted of wild vegetables, flowers, nuts, roots, fruit, berries and other plant sources.

Salt was a commodity that was rare, and consequently most inland people only consumed around 700 (mg) of salt per day. That’s a potassium/sodium ratio of 1:16.

The salt consumption of ancestors is actually about 3 times lower than what current dieticians recommend for a healthy intake of daily salt. But, it does show the body adapts in retaining the sodium it needs to function properly.

Today’s dietary intake shows the complete reverse and this is why out diet is OUT OF BALANCE. Most people take in too much sodium but not enough potassium.

In their article “High Blood Pressure and Nutrition” the author points out that:

The American Heart Association recommends limiting daily sodium intake no more than 1,500 milligrams. (A teaspoon of salt has about 2,400 milligrams of sodium.) Most people greatly exceed these sodium guidelines.

Many experts believe that a great many Americans will consume anywhere from between 2,500 mg to as much as 7,500 mg of sodium per day. This is way in excess of the amount we should be consuming.

Unfortunately, much of this sodium is hidden away in processed or prepared foods. We seem to gravitate towards these foods because of its convenience.

On the other side of the equation, Americans are consuming far less Potassium that what they should be consuming.

Most dieticians recommend that we should be taking in about 4,700 mg of Potassium per day. However, many American adults are only averaging around 2,500 mg per day.

This imbalance can easily result in causing or exacerbating high blood pressure and hypertension.

How does it affect blood pressure?

Here’s how Harvard Health Newsletter describes the process in their article “Potassium and Sodium Out of Balance”

In healthy individuals, the kidneys respond to excess sodium by flushing it out in the urine. Unfortunately, this also removes potassium. If potassium levels are low, the body tries to hoard it, which also means hanging onto sodium. Water follows sodium, leading to an increase in the amount of water in the body and the volume of blood in circulation.

The article also goes on to say this imbalance results in the following:

Blood pressure climbs, and the heart must work harder. Excess sodium blunts the ability of blood vessels to relax and contract with ease, and may also over stimulate the growth of heart tissue. All of these responses are made worse by low potassium intake.

Some Facts About Cholesterol Levels

But first we need to dispel a few myths about cholesterol. Body fat and obesity should not necessarily be automatically linked with high cholesterol. Yet they often are joined because obesity is often linked to a diet which is high in cholesterol.

But, it’s not that simple as a person’s genetics can also play a big role. For example, you might have one individual who is overweight but could have moderate cholesterol levels. Another person who appears to have a healthy body weight/ height ratio may have dangerously high cholesterol levels.

The reason is because cholesterol is not found in the fat you have on your body, it’s found in the blood! This is where you lipids(fat) combines with proteins – and the reason why we measure cholesterol by determining the LIPOPROTEINS.

Cholesterol is measured in several ways including:

• Total cholesterol level
• Triglycerides

As most people now understand these days, there is “BAD CHOLESTEROL” KNOWN AS (LDL) OR LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN.

LDL is the cholesterol that is what you need to lower. The reason is because this is the type of cholesterol which causes atherosclerosis or a fatty build up in the arteries. This can cause a narrowing of the arteries or a build up of plaque. If this continues unchecked, you can get a heart attack, peripheral artery disease (PAD) or a stroke.


Although the science is not certain what it specifically does, the studies seem to support the hypotheses that HDL helps remove LDL cholesterol away from the arteries. Low levels of HDL are shown to decrease the potential risk of heart disease.

Having higher levels of HDL do help reduce the risk but they are only part of the solution because they only help eliminate anywhere from one third or one fourth of the LDL or bad cholesterol.

So, you go to your doctor who takes a blood sample and they tell you the results of your overall cholesterol levels.

What do they mean? How bad are these levels relative to your overall health?

Saturated fats now also comprise a large bulk of out dietary eating habits and this naturally results in dangerously high cholesterol levels.

It ‘s also obvious that high cholesterol levels are a main contributor of arteriosclerosis, increased levels of plaque which can lead to very high risk of a heart attack, stoke and death.

… that’s almost a literal statement.  I think I worked out 3 or 4 times during the entire 2 month period I dropped this weight.

Sound good so far?

Did I mention the diet allows you to eat carbs, cheeseburgers, candy bars… pretty much anything you want?

(Spoiler alert: you don’t get to eat candy bars every day.  Sorry.) 🙂

Back to High School

I’ve never been muscular, so at 6’1, a good range for me over the years has been between 165 to 170.

However, in 2013, my weight began slipping away from me a bit.  I got up to 175, then 180, and topped out at 183 in November 2013.  (I wish I had that picture)

Over the next 5 months I tried to be a bit more conscious about what I ate, and in April 2014, I read an article about how most peoples’ ideal weight is how much they weighed when they graduated high school.  For me, that was 162 lbs.

In the preceding months, I had been introduced to the Better Body System by Yoli, by another founding couple of this site, Angel and Tulane Rivera.  As independent distributors for Yoli, they had told me about some of the amazing results their friends and customers were getting on the Better Body System.

They system is quite easy, and contains 4 of the 5 “eat phit” principles we teach at Living Phit for weight loss.

Here’s the program in a nutshell:

  • Wake up and immediately drink a Passion energy drink – contains 110 mg of caffeine, gives you energy, and acts as a mild appetite suppressant
  • 30 min later drink a Yoli YES shake (they taste amazing)
  • Eat 3 protein snacks during the day (one example might be a cheesestick, 10 almonds, and a couple pieces of turkey bacon.  Another example might be a hard boiled egg and some turkey jerkey.)
  • Drink another YES shake at night
  • If I got hungry before bed I would eat a couple celery sticks with PB
  • 3 days per week, you get to mix in some fruit and good carbs.  That keeps you feeling normal.

Overall, it was really easy, and I’ve found it’s been easy to maintain as the shakes are delicious and you’re not really hungry on the plan.  Moreover, I’ve learned some awesome new eating habits, and in the process I also pretty much kicked soda, and drink Yoli’s Truth drink instead, which is amazing.
